During the research phase we discovered why the periodic table looks the way it does. Once we understood it, we played around with a couple of ways to transfer this understanding to others. The unique thing about an element is the way its electrons are configured, so we decided to focus on that to provide every element with a unique identity.
Result
We ended up developing a concept in which the user started of with a short explanation of the basics atoms, their configuration of electrons, and how this related to the periodic table. After this introduction, the user is able to investigate the whole table freely, clicking around and seeing how the electronic configuration changes periodically.
